While Nisha Sharma is being lauded and felicitated all over the country and the world, a 20-year-old movie came to mind. Shubh Kaamna, which means Good Luck. It is yet another movie on the dowry system and other plaguing issues, like corruption and curse of the girl child. Yet it conveys its message(s) in a light manner.

Much has been written and said about the tradition of dowry since dowry deaths, how bad it is, how giving and accepting dowry is a crime, yet it is supplied in a hush-hush manner, and overlooked like it was as much a part of the wedding ceremony as the pheras.

If movies couldn't do the trick, perhaps the media coverage of Nisha Sharma will inspire more young women to put their foot down?
